Bill to REQUIRE muscadine grape juice in schools

lefty, Uncle Sam pays for the vast majority of school lunches around here so the younguns think it is free and one of their constitutional rights and entitlements. Free lunches are just the beginning of the dependency model.

Joseph, do you think school lunches should not cost children any money?

Forces schools to carry the juice is so stupid.

These same republicans don't think kids should be fed at school.
I don't know of anyone repub or dem that thinks kids should not be fed at school

I would eat green apples from trees, had a salt shaker, worm holes and all. I would eat boiled easter eggs a week old. I would take a salt shaker to my grandpas garden [ he had a huge garden] pull green onions, green peas, radishes, etc. Eat berries all over the woods. Went barefoot, couldn't find my shoes in the summer, when I was a kid. Still here at a ripe old age, Moonshine was always on the table if I wanted any. Moonshine funded the race track in the day, truth. What don't kill you will make you stronger, better immune system and all. So the jest of the story is a little grape juice won't hurt the kiddies.

We have problems, don't we? "EARTH TO HOUSTON, EARTH TO HOUSTON, come in Houston"

I don't know many kids that like tomato juice. Orange juice isn't the only juice provided to the children. They are served apple more than any juice. We grow those. Grape juice to my understanding is more expensive for the schools to purchase. That is one reason it isn't available as often. I love the idea of farm to table. However, the cost is higher. With that said, many school districts Ashe included are already short staffed and under paid. Would the cost of the juice be worth the cuts that might come from forcing the schools to purchase a higher costing item? There is a lot more to think about than just the juice.

Is that it?

I just like the idea of farm to table. Like the dude said in Willy's original article, "We don't grow oranges, we grow grapes."

Yeah, but tomato juice just makes kid want to puke. Not something kind to a young palette.

Do most kids not like tomato juice? Seems it would actually be a healthier choice.

Joseph, that was in the Winston Salem Journal article. I can't get it to come up now (WSJ wants me to pay), but I THINK it said that the owner gave this representative $2700 just before she submitted the bill.

From the W-S Journal Mar 23, 2021

"Mighty Muscadine is owned by Jerry Smith. Smith provided Howard with a $2,700 political donation in 2016, according to opensecrets.org."

Having had children in school, i know that juice is offered in very small cartons only at breakfast. If they choose not to get a fruit that is provided then they get a juice. Grape juice is one that is rarely offered. If a fruit isn't provided then they get a juice. The juices aren't artificially sweetened so there isn't a great deal of harm. Yes, doctors do not recommend giving young children juice. It is a filler with empty calories. Unfortunately, the WIC program still allows juice to be purchased. Many recipients don't want to take the time to shop for the fruits and vegetables that are now offered in the place of juice.

Tabs, it's good to see you again!!!!

I can't find anything saying that orange juice is legally required. This fact sheet from 2015, page 4, says that they CAN offer 100% fruit/vegetable juice, or juice that's diluted with water as long as there are no added sweeteners. It doesn't seem to exclude sweeteners if the juice isn't diluted with water.

Contrary to popular belief, fruit juice (even 100% fruit juice with no added sweeteners) isn't really good for you.

"...100% fruit juice may contain as much sugar as regular soda."

https://www.stanfordchildre...-197-30060

Specifically looking at Mighty Muscadine, a 6.4 ounce container has 13.6g of sugar:

Comparing apples to apples, 12 ounces of muscadine juice has 26g of sugar, orange juice has 28g of sugar, and Coke has 39 grams.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children aged 7-18 consume no more than 8 ounces of 100% fruit juice per day. Adults should have no more than 4 ounces per day.

This is such a great idea. No sugar, a superfood, and the benefit to NC farmers is awesome or are they vineyarders?

Where did you see that the owner of Might Muscadine is a big donor
